Alex Eichenstein is a journalist based in New York.

Alex is a reporter at The Deal, covering M&A and private equity in the healthcare and wellness industries. She’s covered medspas’ expansion into IV therapy and hormone treatments; pressures facing sponsor-backed dental roll-ups; the rise of pharmacy benefit manager–adjacent companies and how they exploit regulatory gray areas to steer patients away from appropriate care; and growing scrutiny of autism therapy providers, which is shifting private equity interest toward healthcare IT focused on compliance and documentation.

Alex graduated from Columbia Journalism School with her M.S. in journalism in May 2023. Expanding on her passion for pop culture, she wrote about the ecosystem of The Bachelor franchise for her master’s thesis.

As a reporting intern for Honolulu Civil Beat, Alex explored water access issues on government land designated for low-income residents. She was also part of the newsroom’s response to the Maui wildfires. For the coverage, the staff was named a finalist for the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting.

At Protocol (R.I.P), she grew the newsroom’s social presence on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Reddit — yes, Reddit! Previously, at the Center for Public Integrity (also R.I.P), Alex created a resource guide on Medicaid expansion and spearheaded the “Gentrified Identified” pop-up newsletter.
